The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) evolved from the Straits Settlement Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (SSRNVR) in Singapore. The SSRNVR was established in April 1934 by the British in Singapore. It became active again post-World War 2 due to the Malayan Emergency in 1948. Because of its contribution, Queen Elizabeth II awarded the title Royal Malayan Navy in 1952. The Royal Malayan Navy became the Royal Malaysian Navy in 1958 after the independence of Malaya.
