The Flying Dutchman was fashioned after a 17th Century Dutch East India Company captain, Bernard Fokke, who allegedly had the extraordinary ability to sail from Java to the Netherlands within three months. This was thought to be impossible unless he made a pact with the devil. The Flying Dutchman is a ghostly phenomenon that originated in South African waters. However, it’s alleged to have been sighted across the ocean beyond the Cape of Good Hope. It was said that Prince George – the future King George V of England – and his brother Prince Victor Albert – saw The Flying Dutchman in July 1881 whilst they were onboard the HMS Inconstant in the Bass Strait off the coast of mainland Australia.
